WHAT IS MEMORY FOAM?

A look at the advantages and disadvantages, and everything you need to know about it.

Do you know what Viscoelastic means? It’s another term for memory foam, that describes its properties. Visco refers to its viscosity, while elastic refers to its ability to retain its shape after being pressed.
NASA first invented it for pilots and passengers to sustain crashes more safely, since then it’s been used in mattresses, car seats, sofas, and spray foam.
Memory foam is a dense substance that is highly resilient, so it can easily take the shape of the person sleeping on it. It’s also elastic because it can go back to its original state after use.
There are many formulas for making memory foam, that involves mixing other chemicals to the primary ingredient, a polymer called Polyurethane.
There are three main types of memory foam;

Traditional Memory foam

Or the memory foam we have been talking so far can model itself to the user by taking their body shape. However, since it is dense and doesn’t allow air to pass through, it retains body heat, making it uncomfortable to use in warm environments. Two other types of memory foam were created to counter this problem.

Open Cell Memory Foam

It comes with a different internal structure that allows heat to escape. The foam is structured to allow air to pass through, keeping your body significantly cooler.

Gel Memory Foam

There are two types of gel-infused memory foams available. The first type absorbs heat; the second regulates temperature to either absorb heat or release it when required. It’s called phase-changing material. The addition of this gel increases the weight of the foam and its durability.

ADVANTAGES

  1. Uses your heat – With the development of the open cell and gel memory foams, it’s easier for your body temperature to be regulated while you sleep. Especially helpful for people who tend to sweat while asleep.
  2. Relieves pain – Since memory foam takes the shape of the user, the soft cushioning reduces pressure on parts of the body. Also, since most spring mattresses have a top layer above the springs, they wear off with use, eventually creating tension in parts of the body.
  3. Hypoallergenic – These types of mattresses do not have space in their internal structure because they’re dense, preventing the build-up for allergens, dust, and microbial.
  4. Supports your back and aligns your spine – Since the foam molds itself to your body shape, it provides the perfect support for your back and perfectly aligns your spine, giving you restful sleep.
  5. Sleep in different positions – If you’re the type of person who moves around a lot in their sleep, this foam is a great solution. Its elastic nature immediately shifts to accommodate the new posture.
  6. Dust mite reduction – It’s hypoallergenic quality reduces the chances of dust mites accumulating in the foam.

DISADVANTAGES

  1. Heavy – These mattresses are dense, making it difficult to carry alone. They also tend to sink and become clumpy with prolonged use.
  2. To much heat – The airflow in these mattresses is restricted and traps heat from the body that causes excessive sweating. Which is why they created the open cell and gel memory foam, so your body temperature is better regulated.
  3. No waterproofing – This foam doesn’t do well with moisture as it is difficult to clean. In case it’s exposed to moisture, its durability reduces. However, you can combat this by getting a waterproof cover or sheet to put on it.
  4. Strong odor – Most products are created using Volatile Organic Compounds that leave bad odors caused by Off-Gassing (the release of harmful chemicals). Memory foam mattresses are no exception, and it often takes a long time for the smell to go away.
  5. Expensive – Memory foam is typically more costly than other types of foam mattresses.

When deciding which foam is better for your mattress, it’s always best to research available options and fully understand them before believing advertisements. Hopefully, this helps you make the right choice.

WHAT IS MEMORY FOAM?

Some simple, easy steps to taking care of and maintaining the water-repellant fabric.
Reading time 1 minute
Do you know what Fluoropolymer (Teflon type) material is? It’s a coating applied on fabric that makes it water repellant. It has small spaces in between that allow vapor to pass through but not water molecules.
This type of fabric is useful for adventure sports and other areas of life like cushion covers etc.
The water-repellant fabric needs to be cared for properly because this coating can erode over time and use. If the cloth starts retaining the water, it needs a new coat.

STEPS FOR CARE

Typically the manufacturer will give you instructions on how to care for the cloth and wash it, but there are some steps you should keep in mind nonetheless.

  1. Do not use any detergent or fabric softener. It causes the coat to erode along with some fiber from the cloth.
  2. When cleaning in your washing machine, be sure to clean it and remove any residue of detergent beforehand.
  3. Use a special waterproof cloth cleaner. Add it to the detergent section and place the cloth inside the machine.
  4. While running the machine, be sure to keep the water at 30 degrees Celsius while going through the wash and rinse cycle.
  5. Then leave the cloth out to drip dry, only use the tumble dry option if your manufacturer says it’s okay. Also, be careful of the temperature at which it is drying.

With these simple steps, you can take care of your water-repellent cloth easily, and make it last longer.

What is NapEazy made off?
Do we use memory foam? And what else is it made of?
Reading time half a minute
We use a mix of soft sponge and carbon-infused memory foam to make napEazy. Since memory foam is soft and can let you sink into the pillow. We wanted to give it more support, so we used a harder foam inside; to cushion the hard aluminum spine and coated it with a layer of memory foam.
This memory foam is infused with graphite and carbon particles from densities 32kg/M3 onwards. Making it resistant to the growth of bacteria, moisture, and has anti-odorant effects. It also has hypoallergenic qualities so it’s safe for people with allergies.
We have treated the fabric with a water-repellent coating. Making napEazy pillows resistant to spills and stains for a better traveling experience.

How to care for memory foam.
A guide to keeping your memory foam pillow clean and remove tough stains.
Reading time 2 minutes.
While cleaning your memory foam cushion or pillow, there are a few points to remember.

  1. Do not use a washer/dryer to clean memory foam. Clean it by hand only.
  2. Do not scrub hard or roughly.
  3. Do not use rough cleaning agents, mild cleaning agents are recommended.

Keeping your pillow clean is possible as long as you make sure to change the pillowcases often. That being said, it is still possible to spill food or drinks accidentally. Which is why you can use the following simple steps to clean it effectively.
If you spill any liquid, other than wine or blood, you can use a mild detergent mixed with water to clean it.
First, remove the pillowcase, and blot out excess liquid with a cloth. Then mix mild dish detergent with water till it reaches a diluted bubbly consistency. Use that to rub the affected area gently till the stain is removed.

If you happen to spill wine or blood on the foam;
Mix one cup of vinegar, and four cups of water and spray it on the affected area. If you don’t have a spray, use a sponge and dab it lightly. Leave it to dry for 30 minutes and then add baking soda to the affected area if the stain remains. After letting it dry for another 30 minutes, use a vacuum cleaner to remove the baking soda residue.

If you happen to spill coffee;
First, spray room temperature water to cool down the memory foam. Hot liquid can damage the foam, so spraying water will reduce the heat. Use a mixture of one cup of vinegar and four cups of water to remove the stain. Leave it to dry for 30 minutes and then add baking soda to the affected area if the stain remains. After letting it dry for another 30 minutes, use a vacuum cleaner to remove the baking soda residue.

In the case of pet urine, a slightly different method is required to be used;
Mix one tablespoon of vinegar, one cup of hydrogen peroxide, and two tablespoons of baking soda together in a solution. Apply it to the stained area and leave it overnight, if the smell remains, repeat the process and then blot clean with cold water. Once cleaned, allow the memory foam to air dry.

Deodorizing memory foam;
Memory foam may smell after purchasing it for the first time, this is because of off-gassing when gasses are released from the foam as a result of the manufacturing process. Leaving it out to air near a window will help the smell go away. If it begins to smell due to other reasons, you can sprinkle baking soda on the foam and leave it out to dry for two to three hours in direct sunlight. Vacuum the foam to remove the baking soda residue and any other micro dust on it.
